Are Local Services Ads Worth It? Real Cost Per Lead by Industry

For most home-service businesses, yes. Google Local Services Ads (the "Google Guaranteed" or "Google Screened" listings) charge per lead instead of per click, and across four businesses we manage they cost between $19 and $46 per lead over the last 30 days. Price depends on your trade, your reviews, how fast you respond, and whether your listed hours match when you actually answer the phone.

"Are Local Services Ads worth it?" comes up on almost every sales call I take. Most answers online are either Google's marketing or a single contractor's anecdote. So here are real numbers from four home-service accounts we manage, plus what actually moves the price.

## What are Google Local Services Ads?

Local Services Ads (LSAs) are the listings at the very top of Google for searches like "roofer near me" or "landscaper near me," usually with a green Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge. They show your business name, rating, review count and hours, and customers can call or message you directly.

The big difference from regular Google Ads: you pay per lead, not per click. A lead is typically a phone call or message from a customer in your service area and category.

## How much do Local Services Ads cost per lead?

Here's what four of our home-service accounts paid over the last 30 days (Google-reported LSA leads, pulled late September 2026):

| Business type | LSA leads (30 days) | LSA spend | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landscaping company | 30 | $576 | $19.19 |
| Roofing company | 33 | $810 | $24.54 |
| Garage door / window company | 61 | $2,597 | $42.57 |
| Landscape supply yard | 26 | $1,203 | $46.27 |

Same platform, a 2.4x spread from cheapest to most expensive. That's why "the average LSA lead costs X" is almost useless. Your category and market matter more than any national average.

### How LSA compares to regular Search ads in the same accounts

In the landscaping, roofing and supply accounts, LSA was cheaper per lead than the non-brand Search campaigns over the same 30 days. In the door/window account it was about even with non-brand Search (roughly $46 per lead). Brand campaigns, where people search your company name, are usually cheaper than both. In the roofing account, for example, LSA leads cost $24.54 while the residential roofing Search campaign came in around $50 per conversion.

That doesn't mean LSA should be your only channel. LSA volume is capped by how many people search in your category and area, and you can't control keywords or ad copy. Search campaigns let you target specific services and scale when LSA runs out of room.

## What affects the cost of Local Services Ads?

### 1. Your trade and job value

Google prices LSA leads by category and market. Higher-ticket categories and competitive metros cost more per lead. A garage door or window replacement lead is worth more than a routine yard cleanup, and the price reflects that.

### 2. Reviews

Your review count and rating are shown right in the ad and affect how often you appear. More recent, positive reviews generally mean more visibility, which lowers the cost of getting in front of customers.

### 3. Response speed

Google tracks how quickly and reliably you respond. Missed calls and slow replies to messages hurt your ranking. Many owners don't realize a voicemail is costing them future leads, not just this one.

### 4. Your hours

Your LSA hours should match exactly when someone answers the phone. Never wider. If your profile says you're open until 8pm but the phone goes to voicemail at 5, you're paying for leads you can't pick up and hurting your responsiveness score at the same time.

### 5. Seasonality

LSA volume follows demand. In one of our landscaping accounts, weekly LSA leads dropped from 10 to 2 in back-to-back September weeks as summer demand faded. That's the calendar, not a broken profile. Plan your budget around your season.

## How do you keep LSA leads cheap?

Cheap leads only stay cheap if someone manages them. What we do on every LSA account:

- Mark every lead in the LSA dashboard (booked, not a fit, spam). This helps Google learn what a good lead looks like for you.
- Dispute charged leads that weren't real leads (wrong service, outside your area, spam). Google can credit these back.
- Respond fast. If you can't answer every call live, set up a fast text-back. A tool like SlickText makes automated text follow-up easy (affiliate link, opens in a new tab).
- Keep categories tight. Turn off job types you don't want so you aren't charged for them.
- Track the call past the ring. LSA reporting often won't tell you who called or whether it became a job. Log outcomes so you know your real cost per booked job, not just cost per lead.

## So, are Local Services Ads worth it?

For most home-service businesses: yes, as a core channel, not the only one. In our accounts LSA is often the cheapest lead source, but it has a volume ceiling, a seasonal swing, and a management burden that a lot of owners underestimate.

## FAQ

Do you pay per click with Local Services Ads?
No. LSAs charge per lead, usually a phone call or message from a customer in your service area. Regular Google Search ads charge per click.

How do I get the Google Guaranteed badge?
You apply through Local Services Ads, pass Google's business and license checks (and background checks where required for your category), and meet insurance requirements. Requirements vary by trade and location.

Can I get a refund for bad LSA leads?
You can dispute charged leads that don't qualify (for example spam, wrong service, or outside your area). Google reviews the dispute and may credit the charge.

Is LSA better than Google Search ads?
Neither is "better." LSA is usually cheaper per lead but limited in volume and control. Search ads let you target specific services and scale. Most home-service businesses do best with both.
